EDAMAME WARNING!!!!!!!!!!
So a few weeks ago, we bought a box of Edamame( Peggy's premium brand) at Costco. They come in packages of 8. Today we were eating #4. I like to put the whole bean in my mouth and slide them out with my teeth, never actually seeing the beans that come out. Ryan is a bit more meticulous and shells each one individually. Anyway, we are all eating them(except Cohen obviously) when out pops a lovely little worm out of Ryan's bean.
I felt instantly queasy as I had just downed a bunch and am sure I can feel little wigglers in my gut now.
I called Costco and and they said they had just pulled the product from their shelves this morning for a similar incident in Eastern Canada. Needles to say, we can take it in for a refund. Uhmm so is you have them in your freezer.... don't eat them unless you are feeling like playing a game from Fear Factor or Survivor.
I don't have much of an appetite anymore..........

Meg, that would be enough to turn me off beans forever! yikes. I had a similar incident a few weeks back...we bought one of those giant "plastic clamshells" of a variety of lettuce from Safeway and had eaten a few salads from it (unwashed b/c it says it was been washed) and i'm about to take a bite when a green round bug flies out of mine! I didn't even think to call Safeway about it...but advice to take from this...regardless of the package saying it's been washed...give it a thorough soak in water yourself!

Same thing happened to me. I still eat edamame, but I'm just more careful now and take them out of the pod before I eat each one.

I also was eating beans and noticed not only a worm but a row of eggs it had laid. I will be taking it back to Costco. Makes you wonder how may you have eaten with knowing. Gross!!!
Thanks for the heads up. I just finished a tray of edamame, wish I would have inspected them better. You do have to expect these things to happen though. Bugs love vegatables! And don't think you're safe by just eating processed foods. Look up "Bug parts per jar of peanut butter" and "fly larvae in pizza sauce". Better yet, don't, you'll probably never eat again.
I just found a worm in a soy bean from Costco a few days ago as well! It was a big fat brown worm too..I totally freaked out, but because I was on my last 4 pkgs I didn't think I could get a refund.
well i was just eating a serving of those beans (also from Costco)and even better than the worm... I found a hair and some strange black thing on a bean after being half way through the serving.
Went to look up the company and found your blog so i thought i'd add my two cents.
Have you considered buying shelled Edamame? Its cheaper because youre not paying for the shell and you'd probably avoid finding those little surprises.
meh... worms in edamame are fairly common, esspecially if they;re organic... it's just a reminder that you're eating a healthy chocie that little creature use too. I feel for you that you don't pop them out pre munching though... I'd feel grossed ot too if I thought I ate one. Dont let this spoil edamame for you though, it's a power food SOOO good for you. Just pop em out first THEN enjoy, and throw away any little friends out find.
Ugh, I was just eating some edamame and found a worm as well...mine was not from Costco though...it is from Jewel Osco. I am TOTALLY disgusted and from now on, I will only be buying shelled edamame!
I bought the pack at Costco and I found a worm in one of the pods...it was my first package! I freaked out completely!
I purchased Peggy's Premium frozen edamame from Superstore in Winnipeg, MB and found a maggot in one of my soybean pods today. Frickin' gross, dudes. I called JYC International in Houston who are contacting the Canadian branch and I tried contacting Superstore's control branch but will have to try again as they were closed. This is really horrific.
I was planning on buying a bag... healthy food.
